Most things don't persist. What surrounds us is what remains once the dust of possibility has cleared. The question of why turns out to have a surprisingly consistent answer: systems that last maintain a balance between stability and adaptability. Those that don't, fail — and they fail in one of four predictable ways. The UST describes those failure modes. It also describes four strategies that dynamic systems use to survive, thrive, and interact with the world around them.
Why It Matters
Nearly everything is a system — stars, ecosystems, economies, organizations, brains. If you can identify a system's version of Flow, Stability, and Adaptability, the framework can map its failure modes, and predict what collapse looks like before it arrives.
